How to take the chaos out of Christmas portraits

There are HOW many days until Christmas???

If you're anything like me, you wait until last minute to get those photographs taken and get  your cards out hoping they will get there before Christmas Eve.
First there is the chaos of getting the perfect outfits and once you do you then realize that everyone's shoes don't match. Ugh, the stress is happening already! Just the thought of it stresses me out. Then you have to choose a photographer or be crazy enough to do it yourself, I promise your stress level will jump a few points. Then you need the perfect location.... and it goes on and on.
Okay, take a deep breath now.

I am going to make this easier for you with a tidy list.

1.  Relieve some of the stress and have coordinating outfits that are comfortable and something your children will be happy wearing. This will reflect on the portraits and make life a bit easier.
2.  If you don't want to go through the hassle or expense of all new shoes for the family then wear coordinating dark toned socks. If the kids are smiling no one will really look at their feet and if they are staring at their feet well then... that's kind of weird.
3.  There are a ton of photographers to choose from. Make sure you choose one that loves and I do mean LOVES to work with children. Also, make sure you discuss what you would like your final image to look like. A rustic style? Contemporary? Christian? Close up or full body or both.
4.   Most photographers will help you choose a location that will best light and compliment your family. This is their profession after all. If you have a specific location feel free to suggest it too. Lighting is a key component to  creating a beautiful portrait. Planning for early morning or early evening will flatter faces much better than the harsh sun at high noon.

The best time to have portraits taken would be the week of Thanksgiving. Most photographers are not busy with weddings at that time and they will be ready and refreshed. If you are one of the lucky ones to have black friday off from work then it is a PERFECT time to have that family portrait at the same time the kids are getting photographed! When was the last time you did that?

When it's time for the photo session sit back and relax. The photographer will take over from there and you can have a cup of cocoa and a full conversation with your spouse while the kids smile and play for the great photographer that LOVES kids that you have chosen!
